Description

This presentation will explore how the early experiences of women relate to their predisposition to the cycle of addiction and how likely they are to develop substance use dependence because of their experiences and genetics. We will also explore the possible consequences (risks) of substance dependence on the expectant mother and an unborn child. We will discuss harm reduction techniques including early intervention, screening, education and recommendations for contraceptives as it relates to women in substance use treatment.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to increase knowledge on risk, intervention, and treatment options for women.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the screening process for Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and discuss two or more ways ACEs can impact women as it relates to substance abuse.

  • Identify two maternal and fetal risks associated with substance use disorders.

  • Describe two or more treatment options available during pregnancy for women with substance use disorders.

Kristin McKamey, MSN, FNP-BC

Kristin has over 20 years experience in various fields of healthcare in nursing, including cardiology/cardiovascular surgery care, critical care step down, hospice/end of life and palliative care, and primary care, pediatrics, women’s health, and transgender care. She has been providing addiction treatment for almost 3 years and is excited to be continuing her career as a specialist in addiction medicine and behavioral health. Kristin is passionate about providing empathetic care to what she feels is a marginalized and stigmatized population, to be able to ease the physical and emotional discomfort associated with beginning and maintaining a journey in addiction recovery for those who feel they have nowhere else to turn for help.
