Description

Module 1 of the training program will expand participants’ understanding of mental health, particularly focusing on the relations between Substance Use Disorders (SUD) and Co-Occurring Disorders (COD). This module will introduce participants to the interaction between SUD and COD and cover the major features of common CODs such as anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, and PTSD. The module also addresses the broader impacts of trauma and substance use on individuals dealing with SUDS/COD.
Evidence-based therapeutic methodologies applicable to treating patients with SUDS/COD will be covered. Through this module, participants are prepared to navigate the complexities of counseling with enhanced competence and sensitivity.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this module is to increase knowledge about SUD and COD and how to treat them.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the interaction of SUD and COD.

  • Identify 2 or more major features of common COD, including anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, and PTSD.

  • Identify and describe 2 ways trauma and related substances impact on patients experiencing SUDS/COD and recovery from the same.

  • Describe the basic theory and tenants of the following evidence-based therapies: TSF, MI/Stages of Change, 12 Step DBT, CBT, Family Systems, and ARISE.

  • Identify and describe specific techniques from TSF, MI/Stages of Change, 12 Step DBT,. CBT, Family Systems, and ARISE that can be effectively utilized with patients experiencing SUDS/COD

State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. Cinde Stewart Freeman, BSN, RN, MA, LADAC II, QCS

Cinde Stewart Freeman is the Chief Clinical Officer at Cumberland Heights in Nashville, TN. Cinde has been in the behavioral healthcare field for over 35 years, serving in direct care, clinical management, quality management, and leadership roles. She is a bachelor’s prepared Registered Nurse and a master’s prepared Level II Licensed Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor. Cinde has also held the Qualified Clinical Supervisor credential for many years and enjoys stoking the passions of people who are coming into the field. She has trained at the national, state, and local level, holding a particular interest in the relationship between somatic and spiritual healing, as well as how the lived wisdom of the Twelve Steps informs and brings color to clinical education and experience.

 

Jeff Wilson, MSW, LADAC II

Jeff Wilson graduated from Tennessee State University with a Master’s in Social Work and is licensed as a substance abuse counselor in the state of Tennessee. He has worked at Cumberland Heights for almost 10 years in a variety of roles. Jeff finds his passion and purpose working with young adults with substance use disorders. In his free time, he loves getting outdoors with his wife and two kids.
