This session provides a review of how the DSM V and ASAM Patient Placement Criteria look at substance use disorders, as well as a review of the commonly abused substances. In addition, since a large majority of individuals with substance use disorders also experience a co-occurring mental health disorder, the most commonly seen disorders and their presentation, as well as DSMV diagnostic criteria are reviewed. Finally, the incidence of trauma is of major significance in this population, necessitating that clinicians have a basic understanding of what trauma is, how it presents, and how it impacts and interacts with SUD and COD.
