Module 1 of the training program will expand participants’ understanding of mental health, particularly focusing on the relations between Substance Use Disorders (SUD) and Co-Occurring Disorders (COD). This module will introduce participants to the interaction between SUD and COD and cover the major features of common CODs such as anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, and PTSD. The module also addresses the broader impacts of trauma and substance use on individuals dealing with SUDS/COD.
Evidence-based therapeutic methodologies applicable to treating patients with SUDS/COD will be covered. Through this module, participants are prepared to navigate the complexities of counseling with enhanced competence and sensitivity.

The educational goal of this module is to increase knowledge about SUD and COD and how to treat them.
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

Explain the interaction of SUD and COD.

Identify 2 or more major features of common COD, including anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, and PTSD.

Identify and describe 2 ways trauma and related substances impact on patients experiencing SUDS/COD and recovery from the same.

Describe the basic theory and tenants of the following evidence-based therapies: TSF, MI/Stages of Change, 12 Step DBT, CBT, Family Systems, and ARISE.

Identify and describe specific techniques from TSF, MI/Stages of Change, 12 Step DBT,. CBT, Family Systems, and ARISE that can be effectively utilized with patients experiencing SUDS/COD
