This presentation is a call to advocacy for counselors of all ages and skill levels. It will focus primarily on the emerging research of the presenter’s dissertation, describing the uses and benefits of implementing a narrative approach when working with individuals living with severe mental illness. We will discuss the pros and cons of the current levels of treatment in the outpatient setting, the common challenges experienced in the counseling space, and brainstorm ways to improve client outcomes through learning more about the individual beyond the diagnosis.

- • Addiction Counselors

- • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists
- • Psychologists
The educational goal of this presentation is to increase participants’ understanding of using a narrative approach when working with individuals with severe mental illness.
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
-
Identify three or more challenges experienced by those living with severe mental illness in accessing quality care.
-
Identify at least two benefits of using insight-oriented modalities with a population historically judged as having little insight.
-
Describe two reasons why it is important to advocate for increased services and care for those living with severe mental illness in outpatient settings and identify one way to implement that advocacy.
