Description

While families of individuals with addiction are often encouraged to stop enabling behaviors, learn to set boundaries with their loved one, and attend supportive 12-step meetings for families, these interventions often fail to give the family members the tools they need to effectively change their behavior. This presentation explores an alternative frame for working with addiction in the family system using principles of motivational interviewing, the stages of change, and values oriented behavior.

  • Addiction Counselors
  • Psychologists

  • Discuss at least 2 strengths and weaknesses of emphasizing confrontational and boundary setting interventions while working with addiction in family systems
