Description
In this training, attendees will be introduced to the history of harm reduction and learn how its principles are based in racial, gender, and social justice. This workshop will cover how to engage in trauma-informed care and help attendees build awareness of the prevalence of trauma, understand how trauma (including intergenerational/historical and secondary trauma) presents, and obtain skills needed to address trauma in their work. Attendees will also learn how to embody the principles of social justice in their work to help build more socially just systems of care to create compassionate and advocacy-oriented spaces for ourselves and our clients and improve care for historically underserved communities.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to increase understanding of trauma and the foundation of harm reduction in social justice.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and describe 3 or more barriers that face underserved populations.

  • Formulate 2 or more collaborative interventions that contribute to resilience and agency, build on individual and community strengths, and avoid pathologizing narratives about the people who consult us.

  • Identify 2 or more culturally responsive interventions that can be adapted to fit the needs of clients/ patients.

Michele Peake Andrasik, PhD, EdM

Dr. Michele Andrasik (she/her) is a clinical health psychologist working to build and enhance partnerships with marginalized communities in clinical research, with a focus on ongoing vaccine trials for HIV and COVID 19. An expert in Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR), historical trauma, bias, and mixed methods research, Dr. Andrasik has led a robust Social and Behavioral Sciences research agenda for the HVTN for over a decade. She has extensive experience working with communities and community organizations, both as a researcher and as a service provider. Prior to her doctoral training, Dr. Andrasik served as the Director of AIDS Services for a community-based HIV/AIDS service organization with offices in New York City. Dr. Andrasik received her BA from New York University, Master’s degrees in Health Education and Psychological Counseling from Columbia University and a PhD in Clinical Health Psychology from the University of Miami.
