In this workshop, clinical opportunities for internet-based interventions for depression will be outlined, focusing especially on enhancing treatment access for depressed Veterans within the VA system. Research findings supporting the effectiveness of internet-based interventions for depression will be presented. Challenges surrounding these interventions and future research directions will be discussed.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to increase knowledge of interventions and treatment for depression.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and discuss 2 reasons for introducing internet-based interventions for depression within the VA.

  • Explain 2 or more ways internet-based interventions reach traditionally underserved populations.

  • Summarize research findings evaluating the effectiveness of internet-based interventions for depression.

Rahel Pearson, Ph.D.

Rahel Pearson, Ph.D., LP is a research psychologist for the VHA VISN 17 Center of Excellence for Research on Returning War Veterans. Dr. Pearson’s research program is focused on improving depression prevention and intervention efforts within the VA. She is especially interested in internet-delivered interventions, which can potentially reach underserved Veterans who might not be a good candidate for traditional therapeutics. The Department of Veterans Affairs has funded her work.
