This workshop will emphasize the importance of advocacy as a tool to empower parents of children with disabilities. This workshop will provide clinicians with the tools they need to help their clients shift the focus from being a victim of societal barriers and stigmas towards utilizing pain, anger, and grief towards advocacy and social change.

The educational goal of this presentation is for participants to understand better how to best support, advocate for and empower clients who are parents of children with disabilities.
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

Identify three ways in which a client (s) can experience internalized ableism and feelings of grief and loss

Describe two ways in which a clinician can help a client reframe their feelings of helplessness into motivation for activism

Identify two ways to help clients use activism as an ongoing coping mechanism
