Description

Social determinants of health (SDOH) are social factors and conditions that influence how individuals live. The effects of that influence are often seen in the health behaviors of patients. It is important for providers to understand SDOH and their impact when considering ways to effectively serve their patient populations. This presentation will provide a more robust definition of SDOH. Attendees will also learn more about the nuanced ways in which SDOH impact health outcomes.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to provide the audience with a foundational understanding of social determinants of health.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Provide a working definition of social determinants of health

  • Describe at least three ways social determinants of health may influence patient behavior and outcomes

  • Explain why an understanding of social determinants of health is important to their role as clinicians or healthcare providers.

Erica C. Spears, PhD, MA

Erica C. Spears, PhD, MA is a health equity leader with over 15 years of professional public health experience in non-profit, governmental, and academic spaces. Over the course of her career she has supported more than 20 grant initiatives across a variety of public health priority areas including substance abuse prevention, mental health, reproductive health, and chronic disease prevention and management. Dr. Spears currently serves as the Director of Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning for Louisiana Public Health Institute. Dr. Spears completed her Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at Auburn University’s Center for Health Ecology and Equity Research; her Doctor of Philosophy degree is in Health Education from Texas A&M University. She also holds a Master’s degree in Speech Communication, with an emphasis in Health Communication, from the University of Houston.
