This presentation focuses on improving healthcare for trans, nonbinary, gender-expansive, and two-spirit individuals. The presentation will cover terminology and its importance and recommend ways to make healthcare more accessible to trans and non-binary patients. We will also discuss current legislation affecting the trans and gender-expansive communities and assessments and interventions that can be used with trans and gender-expansive patients.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this presentation is to increase participants’ understanding of how to improve healthcare access and patient experience for trans, nonbinary, gender expansive, and two-spirit individuals.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define transgender, gender expansive, and two-spirit

  • Identify at least three barriers trans and non-binary individuals face when accessing healthcare and describe the importance of accessible and inclusive healthcare

  • Describe two or more changes that can be implemented in healthcare settings to increase access and inclusivity for trans and non-binary patients

  • Identify two current laws or pending legislation that affects the trans and gender-expansive communities

  • Identify two assessments and interventions that can be used with trans and gender-expansive patients

Nomi Ostrander PhD, LICSW, & MPH

Dr. Nomi Ostrander (she/they) is an associate professor at the University of Minnesota at Duluth’s Department of Social Work. She received her Ph.D. in Disability Studies at the University of Illinois, an MSW from the University of Chicago, and an MPH from DePaul University. Dr. Ostrander’s research follows two main paths: one explores Transgender and Queer mental health; the second focuses on mutual aid and community-led efforts to address issues like gun violence and syringe access programs. Dr. Ostrander is also a sex and kink-positive therapist largely serving Trans, nonbinary, and queer individuals and their partners.

Aleana Kruger

Aleana (Ana) Kruger (Fae/Faer/She/Her) is a co-founder and Vice-Chair of Trans Northland, co-host of the Transgenda podcast, and a trans individual. Ana has been featured in the Woman Today. Ana received certification as an Emergency Medical Technician from Lake Superior College and worked with many individuals from all walks of life in all situations. Although Ana is walking away from emergency medicine, she is walking into activism and advocacy.
