Description

Through the lens of people living with serious mental illness, this presentation will tackle common health concerns seen in the primary care setting; including obesity, smoking, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, and chronic pain. Initial screening and diagnostic criteria for these metabolic disorders will be reviewed, along with consideration of the social and medical factors perpetuating chronic disease disparities for people with serious mental illness. Finally, chronic pain syndromes will be presented along with appropriateness criteria for screening for comorbid psychiatric illness.

Educational Goal
The educational goal of this workshop is to provide attendees with an understanding of the screening, diagnosis and management of cardiometabolic and pain conditions commonly seen in the primary care setting and how serious mental illness may impact these outcomes
Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the screening/evaluation and management guidelines for the major cardiovascular disease risk factors (Obesity, Smoking, Hypertension, Hyperlipidemia, Diabetes).

  • Describe specific screening/ evaluation and management considerations for the major cardiovascular disease risk factors for people with mental illness.

  • Describe the spectrum of chronic pain syndromes.

  • Identify when screening for co-morbid psychiatric illness is appropriate

Sarah Stumbar, MD, MPH

Sarah E. Stumbar, M.D., MPH, has been core faculty at the Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine since August 2015. She teaches medical students at all stages of their training and oversees the third and fourth-year clinical curriculum as the Assistant Dean for Clinical Education. In addition, Stumbar provides primary care within an integrated behavioral health model to the underserved communities of Opa Locka and Miami Gardens through the Green Family Foundation Neighborhood Health Education Program (NeighborhoodHELP). Stumbar, who has a deeply ingrained commitment to social justice and reproductive health care, believes that compassionate and equitable health care can change lives and entire communities. Stumbar has published multiple narrative essays and papers about her experiences and has won numerous awards for her commitment to community health and humanistic medicine.
