There is a growing body of research supporting the theory that the quality and quantity of a person’s relationships have a positive or negative influence on their development. The capacity to form and maintain relationships is essential not only for personal development and wellbeing but also for recovery from substance misuse, processing mental health issues, strengthening families, and developing healthy communities. A sense of acceptance, belonging, love, and bonding are key components of what it means to be mentally healthy, have a positive sense of well-being, and thrive in society.
