This presentation explores the application of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy in treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among veterans. Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to equip mental health professionals with a comprehensive understanding of EMDR therapy and its application in treating PTSD among veterans, enabling them to effectively implement this evidence-based approach to enhance therapeutic outcomes and support the recovery and well-being of veteran clients.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the core principles and phases of EMDR therapy.

  • Summarize how EMDR facilitates the processing and resolution of traumatic memories.

  • Identify at least two common trauma experiences and symptoms of PTSD in the veteran population.

  • Discuss at least one unique challenge and/or consideration in treating PTSD among veterans.

  • Summarize recent research supporting the efficacy of EMDR therapy in treating PTSD.

  • Evaluate the strength of evidence demonstrating EMDR’s effectiveness specifically for Veterans.

  • Illustrate how EMDR techniques can be adapted to address the specific needs of veteran clients.

  • Discuss at least two practical strategies for implementing EMDR therapy in a veteran-focused clinical setting.

  • Identify the key factors contributing to successful outcomes of case studies in which EMDR therapy was used to treat veterans with PTSD.

  • Determine skills to apply EMDR therapy effectively while considering the cultural and situational contexts of veteran clients.

  • Summarize best practices for integrating EMDR into a comprehensive treatment plan for veterans.

As a seasoned psychotherapist with specialized training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Sandra is deeply committed to providing high-quality, evidence-based care for individuals facing trauma and PTSD. Her certification in these modalities equips her to effectively address the complex psychological needs of veterans and first responders, populations she is particularly passionate about due to their unique and challenging experiences.

In her roles as a National Clinical Supervisor and Independent Clinical Supervisor, Sandra guides and mentors other clinicians, ensuring the delivery of exceptional therapeutic services while promoting professional development within the field. Sandra’s ongoing pursuit of a PhD, with a focus on veterans, moral injury, PTSD, dissociation, and trauma treatment, further deepens her expertise and enhances her ability to contribute to the evolving landscape of mental health care.

Sandra’s practice is rooted in a deep respect for the resilience and strength of those who serve our communities and our country. She is dedicated to creating a supportive and empathetic environment where clients can explore their experiences and work toward healing and personal growth. Through both direct therapeutic work and supervisory roles, she strives to uphold the highest standards of clinical excellence and to make a meaningful impact on the lives of those who have dedicated themselves to serving others.
