Description

This session provides a review of some of the evidence-based counseling modalities that are utilized in the treatment of substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders.  In addition to the basic theory and tenants of each approach,  practical strategies and techniques that can be utilized in a residential, high intensity, and intensive outpatient environment will be discussed.  Participants will engage in a specific discussion of how the counselor determines what approach or technique is appropriate for the individual patient, including cultural responsiveness within that theory base.

Educational Goal

Provide a baseline of information that encourages further exploration and practice for counselors working with patients with substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders in residential, high intensity, and intensive outpatient settings.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • The participant will describe the basic theory and tenants of the following evidence based therapies: Twelve Step Facilitation (TSF) Motivational Interviewing (MI)/Stages of Change Twelve Step Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Family Systems Therapy A Relational Sequence of Engagement (ARISE)

  • The participant will describe two specific techniques from each type of therapy that can be effectively utilized with patients experiencing SUD/COD

Cinde Stewart Freeman, BSN, RN, MA, LADAC II, QCS

Cinde Stewart Freeman is the Chief Clinical Officer at Cumberland Heights in Nashville, TN. Cinde has been in the behavioral healthcare field for over 35 years, serving in direct care, clinical management, quality management, and leadership roles. She is a bachelor’s prepared Registered Nurse and a master’s prepared Level II Licensed Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor. Cinde has also held the Qualified Clinical Supervisor credential for many years and enjoys stoking the passions of people who are coming into the field. She has trained at the national, state, and local level, holding a particular interest in the relationship between somatic and spiritual healing, as well as how the lived wisdom of the Twelve Steps informs and brings color to clinical education and experience.

Kirk Schafer MA, LADAC II

Prior to his current position as Clinical Director of the Women’s Department, Kirk worked as a family counselor for six years at Cumberland heights, providing direct family services to patients and families. Prior to his time at Cumberland Heights, Kirk served in a variety of clinical therapy and administrative roles for three different behavioral health organizations in multiple states. Kirk has a passion for helping people learn to trust themselves again, to recover from the depths of self-destruction associated with addiction and other mental illnesses, and to build healthy and happy lives.
