Psychedelic medicine is becoming increasingly popularized in academics, medicine, and the media. Past and recent research suggests that psychedelic drugs can be effective for many mental health conditions when utilized in conjunction with psychotherapy. Mental health practitioners need to be prepared to serve clients seeking psychedelic-assisted therapy and after-care in a competent and ethical manner. This talk will cover: (1) the psychedelic substances being currently used in research and therapy, (2) key components of psychedelic psychotherapy, (3) the importance of focused training in the ethical and competent delivery of service, and (4) what to do when clients say they have tried psychedelics outside of a medical context, based on principles of harm reduction.
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
-
Identify the psychedelic substances being currently used in research and therapy.
-
List the key components of psychedelic psychotherapy.
-
Appreciate the importance of focused training in competent delivery of psychedelic services.
-
Knowledge of how to respond therapeutically to clients who have tried psychedelics on their own.
