Stephen Porges and Anthony Gorry discuss their new technology that has enabled them to create a new genre of music, Polyvagal Music (PVM). PVM is informed by decades of research studying physiological rhythms in the body, their technology enables music to activate the body’s natural rhythms, promoting healing and growth. PVM uses endogenous biological rhythms embedded in unique musical themes, signaling the healing functions of the autonomic nervous system. PVM is designed to supplement treatment strategies for healthcare providers when treating clients with mental and physical illness including chronic stress and functional disorders.
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
-
Describe the relationship between homeostatic regulation of the autonomic nervous system and mental and physical health.
-
Explain how physiological state biases behavioral, psychological, and autonomic reactions and impact on social and cognitive function.
-
Explain the role of vagus, as a surveillance system, in promoting homeostatic functions.
-
Explain how music, containing rhythms synchronous with endogenous bodily rhythms, may signal neural circuits to calm the nervous system and promote homeostatic functions.
