In this 60-minute presentation, we will explore the transformative power of nutrition in supporting sobriety and overall wellness. Drawing on the latest research and clinical insights, we will discuss the intricate relationship between nutrition and addiction recovery, emphasizing practical strategies for healthcare professionals to integrate dietary interventions into treatment plans. Key topics include the impact of alcohol on the body, nutritional deficiencies common in individuals with alcohol use disorder, and other body systems to focus on healing (eg. gut, hormones, and more).
We will also discuss in-depth, the ways in which alcohol and other substances can affect different body systems, like the gut, hormones, cortisol, and the brain, and how we can use nutrition, supplementation, and natural methods to heal from substance use.
The presentation will focus mainly on the impact that alcohol and other substances can have on nutrient levels, which can have a variety of impacts from energy production to hormones, digestion to neurotransmitter production, and so much more. Nutrient deficiencies and strategies for replenishing nutrients will be discussed, including specific foods and supplementation guidance. Specific nutrients will be discussed, including Vitamin D, B vitamins, Magnesium, Zinc, Omega 3’s and more.
Supplementation will be discussed at a high level, but recommendations for testing and further evaluation will also be presented. I will give advice on how to adequately test nutrient levels via blood tests and specialty labs (eg. Organic Acid Testing).
I will discuss the functional sobriety approach, which also includes discussion on how substances affect the gut microbiome, contribute to digestive concerns, intestinal permeability and other gut-related issues. We will also discuss substances and their afffect on cortisol and hormones, a topic of great interest in both male and female populations. I will also discuss how nutrients and gut issues can affect overall mental health.
Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how personalized nutrition can enhance outcomes in sobriety and contribute to holistic well-being.
I will also advise practitioners how to find a nutritionist or dietitian who has the proper experience and knowledge to work within the sobriety population. I will also discuss the opportunity for nutritionists to work within inpatient and outpatient settings to optimize health and recovery outcomes.
3-5 Case studies will be presented with specific protocols and outcomes shared.
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
-
Understand the physiological effects of alcohol on the body and the resulting nutritional deficiencies.
-
Learn evidence-based dietary strategies to support recovery and promote overall health in individuals with alcohol use disorder and substance use disorder.
-
Explore practical ways to integrate nutrition counseling into addiction treatment plans for improved patient outcomes.
-
Discuss case studies and real-life applications of nutrition interventions in sobriety maintenance.
