Addictions, anxiety, depression, and suicide are on a fast rise in America, especially with Millennials and Generation Z. Addiction is an adaptive survival response to overwhelming experiences of pain, emptiness, isolation, and toxic shame. Treatment for addiction and mental health struggles frequently focuses solely on sobriety, abstinence, or merely alleviating symptoms, but neglects the critical discovery and resolution of the root underlying causes. These causes are often demoted to mere lip service or outright dismissal. Trauma injures our neurophysiological systems by mis-calibrating the Autonomic Nervous System and the inner self with toxic shame. These ruptures, left unrepaired, disconnect us from our true identity and impede the formation of secure attachments. This presentation delves into the process of rupture and repair within the three core systems: coping behaviors, core being, and family context. It explores the concept of the “Masterpiece Effect” which proposes that individuals have the potential to emerge stronger and healthier after repair, than they were before experiencing rupture.
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
-
Participants will be able to construct a diagram of the three core systems conceptual framework.
-
Participants will be able to describe post-traumatic growth through the rupture and repair process and its Masterpiece Effect.
-
Participants will be able to discuss the repercussions of unhealed trauma from a Polyvagal Theory perspective and connect it to toxic shame and the development of addiction.
-
Participants will be able to describe the concept of the enticement power factor in the development of addictions.
