Description

This workshop will provide a landscape of the fatherhood field from 1980 to the present day, discuss how fathers parent their children, and explore how certain policies and legislations have hampered males from being more engaged in their role as fathers. Participants will learn about the different ways fathers are actively engaged in their families. We will also discuss strategies practitioners can use to create father-inclusive environments.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is for participants to learn about the role of fathers, the current system/policy landscape, and strategies to create father-inclusive environments.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain a father’s role in a family.

  • Describe two ways to better prepare males entering fatherhood.

  • Summarize how father engagement in pregnancy and childbirth affects health outcomes for the infant and/or mother.

  • Identify and analyze two or more ways father involvement during childhood and adolescence impacts a child's health.

  • Describe two or more ways to develop a father-inclusive healthcare or behavioral healthcare environment.

  • Determine two local, state, or federal system or policy changes that would encourage father involvement.

Bantu D. Gross, PhD

Bantu D. Gross is the Director of Fathers Matter NOLA in New Orleans, Louisiana. As the Fathers Matter
director, Dr. Gross assists fathers in discovering and refining their innate fatherhood skills, promoting African American fathers’ involvement in the lives of their children, and helping men define masculinity. Before his work with Fathers Matter, Dr. Gross served as a mental health professional and college counselor with 10+ years of experience mentoring adolescents and young adults from diverse populations and backgrounds.

Additionally, Dr. Gross has partnered with non-profit organizations focused on preparing high school students for college and assisted in the development and maintenance of a scholarship-nominating network in New Orleans. Dr. Gross holds a PhD in Recreation & Leisure Studies from the University of Georgia, a Master’s in Psychological Counseling from Nicholls State University, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Southern University.
