Participants will be able to:

  • Define pubertal suppression medication and describe how it is used in the treatment of gender dysphoria.

  • Identify the two primary mechanisms of delivery of pubertal suppression medication in the treatment and prevention of gender dysphoria in pubertal youth.

  • Explain three potential side effects of puberty blockers for the treatment and prevention of gender dysphoria.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to equip attendees with research-informed knowledge about the safety and efficacy of pubertal suppression medication in treating and preventing gender dysphoria in pubertal youth.

Description

This session will provide a detailed description and definition of pubertal suppression medication, the mechanisms for delivery, and data that elucidate their safety and efficacy. We will also provide information on how to assess the clinically appropriate timing for initiating pubertal suppression in treating and preventing gender dysphoria in pubertal youth.

Johanna Olson-Kennedy, MD

Johanna Olson-Kennedy, MD is an Adolescent Medicine physician specializing in the care of gender nonconforming children and transgender youth. Board certified in Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, Dr. Olson-Kennedy has been providing medical intervention for transgender youth and young adults including puberty suppression and cross sex hormones for the past 17 years, and is considered a national expert in this area. She is the Medical Director of The Center for Transyouth Health and Development at Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles, the largest transgender youth clinic in the United States. Dr. Olson-Kennedy is an Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the Keck School of Medicine at USC.
