Educational Goal
The educational goal of this workshop is to provide a foundation of knowledge about the development of gender identity and the impact of cisnormativity on the development of gender dysphoria and to increase knowledge about how to assist children in identifying language to describe their gender identity.
Description
This session will explore a youth’s understanding of how gender, transition, and dysphoria is affected by transition and developmental stages. We will also explore strategies to encourage “informed listening” to assist young children in finding language to describe their experiences with their gender. The pressures of how a cisnormative childhood can affect transgender children who transition before puberty will also be discussed.

Presenters
Darlene Tando, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, has a private practice in San Diego and has worked with transgender youth and adults since 2006. Darlene provides consultations and ongoing therapy for gender-expansive/transgender children, adolescents, and adults. Darlene is a proponent of the Informed Consent model and believes the individual is the “expert” on one’s gender identity. She believes it is her role to support the individual and family to assist in making one’s journey easier. Darlene is the author of the book “The Conscious Parent’s Guide to Gender Identity: A Mindful Approach to Embracing Your Child’s Authentic Self.”
