The educational goal of this workshop is to increase understanding of addiction, addiction treatment, and recovery.

Description

This three-hour presentation will increase participants’ overall understanding of addiction, addiction treatment, and recovery. Participants will learn to understand addiction as a primary disease not caused by other life circumstances and learn about the different classes of drugs used by persons with addictions. Moreover, participants will learn various treatment models and increase their understanding of the recovery process. There will be opportunities for audience Q&A.

A. Kenison Roy, III, MD DLFAPA, DFASA

A. Kenison Roy, III, MD (Ken) is Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine at Tulane School of Medicine, Director of the Division of Addiction Medicine within the Department of Psychiatry, and Program Director of the Addiction Medicine Fellowship. He is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine. He is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, The American Board of Preventive Medicine in Addiction Medicine, and the American Board of Addiction Medicine. He is a member of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry, The American College of Psychiatrists, the American Medical Association, the Louisiana State Medical Society and the Louisiana Psychiatric Medical Association (LPMA) and is a Past President of LPMA. He has long held leadership positions in the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and was most recently a member of the Board of Directors representing Region VII.
