This two-day, application focused training will provide participants with an in-depth look at some of the significant changes and improvements in the Fourth Edition of the ASAM Criteria. Participants will have opportunities to apply and practice key components of the Criteria, including but not limited to; the six dimensions, level of care assessment, application of Risk Ratings to each of the Five Dimensions, Dimensional Admission Criteria Decision Rules, shared decision making and an overview of Service Characteristic Standards, Discharge,  and Transition Criteria.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Summarize the revised dimensions, sub-dimensions and dimensional assessment goals in the ASAM Criteria 4th Edition.

  • Explain Dimension 6, “Person-Centered Considerations” and shared decision making.

  • Describe the core actionable factors, varied focus, and intent between the Level of Care Assessment and the Treatment Planning Assessment.

  • Review and practice application of the dimensional admission criteria, integrated risk ratings, continued stay and transition criteria.

  • Identify the four broad levels of care and explain how the decimal system defines intensity.

  • Identify and describe key level of care “service characteristic” standards.

  • Explain the intent and relevance of Trauma Sensitive Practices, Social Determinants of Health and Culturally Humble Care.

  • Analyze Harm Reduction as an important aspect of individualized, person centered care

  • Summarize the expectations for co-occurring care and addiction medications.

Bernie Showers, PhD, LCSW

Dr. Bernard Showers, DSW, LCSW, earned his MSW at Shippensburg University in 2010, where he is now an Adjunct Professor. Mr. Showers also works as an Adjunct Professor for the University of Maryland School of Social Work in Baltimore and Simmons University School of Social Work in Boston, Massachusetts. In the fall of 2018, he was awarded the Dean’s Teaching Award at the University of Maryland for instructional excellence. In September 2016, Dr. Showers attended the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers Train-the-Trainer event and is now one of 1,500 MINT members worldwide. Mr. Showers has trained aspiring and active independent practitioners at many colleges, universities, governmental agencies, and companies around the United States. In addition to Motivational Interviewing, Mr. Showers has developed, presented, and published several continuing education workshops on family involvement in substance use treatment, ASAM criteria, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, and group therapy. Bernard earned his DSW as part of the inaugural class of The University of Kentucky’s Doctorate of Social Work (DSW) program. In July 2021, Bernard Showers was the lead author on the manuscript “Medication for Opioid Use Disorder in Rural America: A Review of the Literature” published in the APA’s Journal of Rural Mental Health.
