  • Discuss 3 ethical responsibilities counselors/counselor educators hold in systemic advocacy efforts including legislative advocacy.

The educational goal of this workshop is to provide counselors and counselor educators with advocacy skills and resources that they can apply in their professional settings.

Description

Currently, in the United States, marginalized groups, including the LGBTQIA+ community, are under legislative attack. This impacts many students and clients served by counselors and counselor educators. This presentation aims to guide counselors who want to engage in legislative advocacy and counselor educators who want to teach strong advocacy skills to their students. This presentation will include specific examples of advocacy skills and provide resources that help make advocacy accessible to all counseling professionals.

Valeo “Leo” Khan-Snyder, M.S., tLMHC, NCC is an openly queer and transgender clinical mental health counselor and the current President Elect for the American Counseling Association of Iowa and a SAIGE Public Policy Committee member. Throughout his professional career, he has developed a passion for working with marginalized populations, particularly serving LGBTQIA+ clients in rural communities. Valeo has been passionate about developing a strong social justice advocacy presence at the state and national levels. His primary advocacy focuses include providing education, writing position statements, and building coalitions and advocacy-centered communities.
