This workshop provides addiction professionals with an in-depth exploration of recovery dynamics in gambling and substance use disorders. Integrating research and clinical insights, participants will critically assess and refine conventional recovery frameworks. The session will explore parallels and differences in recovery trajectories, focusing on advanced intervention strategies and addressing challenges such as stigma, triggers, and co-occurring mental health issues. Case studies and discussions will highlight emerging trends and best practices, emphasizing holistic, inclusive approaches to treatment. Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to equip behavioral health professionals with a deeper understanding of the complex interplay between gambling and substance use disorders, enabling them to enhance their clinical practice.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Summarize the intricate connections between gambling and substance use disorders, including similarities, differences, and overlapping challenges in the recovery process.

  • Identify at least three key barriers to recovery faced by individuals with co-occurring gambling and substance use disorders.

  • Describe 2 or more best practices in recovery-oriented care for gambling and substance use disorders.

  • Analyze emerging trends in recovery-oriented care for gambling and substance use disorders, emphasizing holistic approaches that integrate psychological, social, and environmental factors.

Dr. Heather is an Addiction Psychologist who holds a PhD along with numerous other licenses, certifications and awards, including the United Nations – Drug Free Hero Award, United Nations Convention – International Drug Prevention Award, and the Presidential Lifetime Service Award. She is the National Speaker for the Elks Drug Awareness Program, CEO at Genesis Health Group, and a Professor at Middlesex College. Dr. Heather owns Dr. Heather Talks, a consulting firm that enables her to travel all over the country to speak on substance use disorder and gambling topics.  She also owns H&M Wellness, which provides substance use disorder and gambling telehealth services.  Dr. Heather is also the founder of Heather’s Hope Foundation that provides transportation for people needing to get to treatment and educates communities on substance use disorders. 

 

Dr. Heather’s recent publication, “Understanding Addiction and Recovery: The Ultimate Guide to Hope, Healing, and Self-Discovery,” is a testament to her dedication to informing and empowering anyone that wants to know more about Substance Use Disorders.
