Description

Families have a significant impact on the development and prevention of mental health problems and addiction. Attachment and developmental issues, childhood trauma, and Intergenerational trauma are all shared in our families of origin. Socio-economic factors, cultural norms, values, and explanations are inherited from our families and ancestors. They can either put us at risk or protect us from developing addiction and mental health problems. Similarly, addiction and mental health problems have a severe impact on our own families, friends, communities, and society. A significant amount of time, money, and effort is put into treatment options to help individuals recover. Still, we often overlook the role of families and communities in the recovery process. Family programs should go beyond education and limited therapy sessions to address the gap between individuals in recovery and their families. Whole Family Recovery is a process for families to recover from the impact of addiction and mental health problems in the family held in parallel to the treatment of the person with addiction. As the family changes alongside the person undergoing treatment, they will all emerge from treatment in a place where the entire family is in recovery. This is a place where every member of the support system has similar knowledge, skills, and support to deal with the impact of addiction. Everyone speaks the same language about addiction, mental health, and all aspects of recovery. In this presentation, Dr. Mouton will present a structured approach to assess your current family program and implement Whole Family Recovery into your current practice. He will explore different culturally sensitive modalities and methods to engage families throughout the whole recovery process. Whether you work in a team or individually, improving the outcomes of your program by involving the family in finding their own recovery at the same time as the client you work with is crucial for achieving sustainable, long-term recovery and ensuring intergenerational resilience.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Evaluate their own practice to identify any gaps in the support they offer to families before, during, and after treating individuals with addiction.

  • Identify 3-4 risk and protective factors in individuals, families, communities, and cultures for the development of addiction and mental health problems.

  • Identify 2 aspects of whole family recovery that can be implemented into their existing family programs.

  • Explain how to utilize the culture, heritage, wisdom, and explanations offered by the family to assess resilience in the family and improve outcomes of individual treatments.
