  • Define boundary crossing, boundary violation, and double bind situation.

  • Identify 2 or more differences between a boundary crossing and a boundary violation.

  • Identify 3 potential boundary issues in case studies and describe strategies for mitigating each.

  • Recognize and respond appropriately to complex boundary dilemmas, as measured by comparison of beginning and end of workshop survey on challenging real-world scenarios.

The educational goal of this workshop is to enhance professionals’ understanding of ethical boundaries and dual relationships to uphold trust and integrity in asymmetric relationships.

Description

Maintaining ethical boundaries is essential for building trust in professional relationships. This workshop explores best practices for preserving appropriate physical, emotional, and social boundaries with clients, students, patients, and other vulnerable populations. We will define key terminology, identify boundary crossings versus violations, discuss complexities related to self-disclosure and gifts, and provide strategies for avoiding or mitigating problematic dual relationships. Whether you are established in your career or just
starting out, this workshop will enhance your understanding of ethics and boundaries, with time for questions and discussion.

Andrea Brognano, LMHC, LPC, NCC, CCMHC, ACS

Andrea Brognano is a Licensed Mental Health Clinician and the group practice owner of Therapy Connection, an online mental health group practice that was established in late 2019. Therapy Connection has expanded to multiple states and expanded services including in-home services in New Jersey for children with disabilities. Andrea opened her second company, Achieve With Andrea (AWA), in the summer of 2021. AWA has several different programs including a membership to help therapists with social media, hosting women’s retreats and workshops, creating useful journals for purchase, a course for female entrepreneurs, wellness workshops for businesses, and a department for continuing education for therapists. In June 2023, Andrea opened a third company dedicated to mental health, specifically for people with developmental disabilities in New York. Andrea is passionate about mental health and how to help other entrepreneurs maintain mental wellness to be able to excel while holding a life-work balance.
