Participants are expected to gain competency in the diagnosis and treatment of OCD in children and adolescents.

Description

The presentation will provide an overview of diagnosing OCD in children and adolescents and formulating an effective treatment plan. The emphasis will be on Exposure Response Prevention techniques and avoiding family accommodation. Specific subtypes of OCD that are often overlooked will be included. A review of accessible resources for clinicians will be offered.

Presenters

Dr. Leslie Higgins

Dr. Higgins is a Clinical Psychologist currently in private practice in Metairie, Louisiana. As a native New Orleanian, she attended Newcomb College of Tulane University before earning her Psy.D. at Florida Institute of Technology. She has worked with children, adolescents, and families as well as with adults for over 35 years. Specialty areas include OCD, anxiety, ADHD, and autism spectrum disorders. Most recently, she has been a founding member of the Louisiana OCD affiliate of the International OCD Foundation and has actively participated in OCD related conferences and a monthly OCD consultation group sponsored by Louisiana OCD. Dr. Higgins spent 20 years as a consultant to St. Charles Parish schools helping design and implement intervention programs for challenging special education students, assisting the Head Start Program, and providing assessments of court adjudicated youth. She served as the mental health consultant for St. John the Baptist Parish Head Start and St. Charles Parish Head Start programs for many years. Since focusing on full-time private practice post-Katrina, her emphasis has been on complex cases often involving OCD, ADHD, anxiety disorders, and autism spectrum disorders.
