Participants will be able to:

Define the concept of affirming care for 2SLGBTQ+ patients.

Identify at least two major theoretical frameworks in affirming care.

Describe one or more ways 1) oppression 2) resistance, and 3) community connectedness impacts 2SLGBTQ+ health outcomes.

Identify affirming care best practices at individual, interpersonal, and systemic levels and explain how to apply them in practice.
Educational Goal
The educational goal of this workshop is for participants to learn how to better deliver trauma-informed 2SLGBTQ+ competent care to patients.
Description
This workshop will aid providers in understanding and addressing the health care needs of 2SLGBTQ+ patients. Participants will receive an introduction to affirming care and learn about foundational theoretical frameworks in affirming care, such as intersectionality and trauma informed principles. We will discuss the impact of oppression, resistance, and community connectedness on 2SLGBTQ+ health outcomes. Participants will learn how to apply these frameworks through best practices in affirming care, including practices at individual, interpersonal, and systemic levels.

Presenters
Jasper J. Privat, PsyD (they/them) is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist based in New Orleans since 2008. They practice clinical and community psychology, guided by a commitment to accessible, evidence-based, and liberatory health care. Jasper has completed advanced postdoctoral training in 2SLGBTQ+ health care education and served on the Executive Board of the American Psychological Association’s Division for the Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity. They are thrilled to be involved in ongoing research, teaching, and co-mentorship with emerging psychologists and allied health professionals, including as a consulting researcher for Tulane University and an adjunct professor for Xavier University. Jasper also enjoys gardening, baking, and being a cat dad.
R. Reed, OTR/L (they/them) is an occupational therapist specializing in adult neurological injuries at Touro Infirmary. Originally from Los Angeles, R is proud to call New Orleans home. They currently volunteer as a junior board member at the Rebuild Center, a space that serves unhoused community members. R is an annual guest lecturer at LSU Health Sciences Center where they teach future healthcare providers on topics of gender, unhoused community health disparities, and social determinants of health.
