This workshop will give a broad overview of shame-based family systems, how they are formed, the characteristics of shamed-based families, and the effects on family members. Participants will learn concrete tools to help shame-based family systems begin to heal.

  2. Identify 4 diagnostic criteria used to assess the health of a family system
  3. Explain the foundations of shame via Erickson’s Stage Theory
  4. Identify 3 characteristics of shame-based families
  5. Identify 3 effects of shame on family members
  6. Describe 2 techniques used to heal shame in families

Stephen R. Honaker

Stephen has a B.A. in Education, a B.S. in Accounting, and an M.Ed. in Mental Health Counseling. Stephen began his professional career in finance and investment banking and worked at one of the two New York Stock Exchange firms based in Florida throughout most of the 1990s.

Inspired by his passion for helping others, Stephen pursued a career change and entered the mental health field in 2002. Stephen has been a Florida Licensed Mental Health Counselor since 2005, and is a Qualified Supervisor and is trained in EMDR. Before joining the Headwaters Executive Unit at Origins in the summer of 2017, Stephen served as an Executive Director, Program Director, and Clinical Director of multiple agencies in Palm Beach, Florida. Stephen also created a proprietary family program in 2008 for family members and loved ones of those struggling with substance use disorders. Stephen facilitated this program at numerous treatment programs on a contract basis throughout Florida. While continuing to provide family services to executives at Headwaters. Stephen is also currently one of the facilitators of the Hanley Center at Origins Family Education Program, a week-long program provided for family members and loved ones of Origins patients.
