Description

Approximately 36 million people in the United States participate in organized sports. This substantial participation underscores the need to look beyond the fanfare to understand the mental health needs of athletes. The demands of training, competition pressures, commercialization, and visibility of their performances can make athletes susceptible to various mental health issues. This presentation provides counselors with valuable insights, evidence-based techniques, and practical strategies for navigating the intricacies of working with athletes of any age. By addressing these mental health needs, counselors can help athletes achieve peak performance and optimal mental health.

Presenters

Dr. David Schary, LPC-A, Ph.D

Dr. David Schary is a Professor of Exercise Science at Winthrop University. He teaches and conducts research on sport psychology and health promotion. Dr. Schary also serves as the Director of Mental Health and Performance for Winthrop Athletics. In his role, he works with student-athletes to improve their performance and wellbeing. Dr. Schary earned his Ph.D. in Exercise and Sport Science, with a concentration in Exercise and Sport Psychology at Oregon State University. He completed M.Ed. in Counseling and Human Development with a concentration in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Winthrop University and is currently an LPC-A. Dr. Schary is also completing the requirements for the Association of Applied Sport Psychology’s Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC). Prior to academia, Dr. Schary coached high school and college rowing. He rowed for four years at the University of California, Davis.
