Description

Sixty-six percent of homes have a pet and up to 65% of women will delay going to a shelter because of concerns about their pets. Sheltering Animals & Families Together (SAF-T) is a global initiative working around the world to create onsite pet housing programs at domestic violence shelters. When domestic violence survivors can find safe housing with their companion animals, it eliminates a barrier to safety.

Target Audience
  • Counselors
  • Substance Use Disorder Professionals
  • Psychologists
  • Social Workers
Educational Goal

The educational goals of this workshop is to increase knowledge about safe housing for domestic violence victims with pets and to provide information about how to help a community create a pet-inclusive domestic violence shelter.

  • Describe at least 3 ways animal abuse and domestic violence are connected.

  • Explain why shelters that do not offer pet housing create a barrier to safety to domestic violence victims.

  • Identify 4 ways shelters are housing pets onsite.

  • Summarize how to help create a pet-inclusive shelter in their community.
