Description
This session will provide clinicians with tools to use with parents of transgender children to assist them with listening to a child’s assertion of their gender identity. Emphasis will be placed on providing frameworks to help parents resist the pressure they often feel to justify affirming their child’s gender and exploring the presentation of internalized and externalized gender-related distress.

Presenters
Darlene Tando, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, has a private practice in San Diego and has worked with transgender youth and adults since 2006. Darlene provides consultations and ongoing therapy for gender-expansive/transgender children, adolescents, and adults. Darlene is a proponent of the Informed Consent model and believes the individual is the “expert” on one’s gender identity. She believes it is her role to support the individual and family to assist in making one’s journey easier. Darlene is the author of the book “The Conscious Parent’s Guide to Gender Identity: A Mindful Approach to Embracing Your Child’s Authentic Self.”
