Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to increase knowledge of treating individuals with co-occurring Intellectual Disabilities and/or Autism Spectrum Disorder and Substance Use Disorder, Anxiety and/or Mood disorders.

Description

Over the last decade, the mental health community has become aware that there is a significant subgroup of individuals with Intellectual Disabilities and/or Autism Spectrum Disorder who have comorbid Substance Use Disorder. There is evidence that the prevalence of these co-occurring disorders has been rising. Sadly, the scientific literature offers little regarding how to treat these unique combinations of disorders.

The purpose of this workshop is to explain executive functions, how they differ between Substance Use Disorder, and Intellectual Disability and/or Autism Spectrum Disorder, how they can present in combination, and how to treat them to relieve suffering. Additionally, this workshop will address the general concepts of treating anxiety and/or mood disorders in those with Intellectual disorder and/or Autism Spectrum Disorder. This three-hour workshop can be used to begin connecting those who work with Intellectual Disability and/or Autism Spectrum Disorder with those who treat Substance Use Disorder and other behavioral health conditions in such a way that they can work together to help their common clients
