Participants will be able to:

Identify two first-line antiretroviral therapies to treat people living with HIV.

Discuss why an HIV viral load that is 'undetectable' via lab work is equivalent to not transmitting HIV through sexual contact or IV drug use (This is known as Undetectable equals Untransmittable (U=U)).

Discuss two updates regarding the use of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).

Discuss three clinical benefits of a same-day start (rapid start) strategy.
Educational Goal
The educational goal of this workshop is for participants to learn how to best support those living with HIV and increase knowledge about HIV prevention, management, and treatment.
Description
We will discuss the recent updates on HIV advancements in treatments and better ways to prevent and manage the virus. We will also review information about how different populations are more at risk for contracting HIV and what we can do to reduce the risks. Lastly, it is our intention to inform health care professionals on how to support best those living with HIV, as well as ways that can be taken to reduce new infections.

Presenters
Dr. MarkAlain Dery is an infectious disease physician and epidemiologist with Access Health Louisiana- the most extensive Medicaid-providing clinic system in Louisiana. Dr. Dery is the Medical Director of infectious diseases and Chief Innovation Officer.
Dr. Dery has over 23 years of experience and has been at the forefront of the COVID pandemic, offering his expertise and recommendations affecting the most medically needy in Louisiana. He was the medical director for the country’s first public COVID testing site. He served on the COVID Public Health Commission for New Orleans Mayor Latoya Cantrell and was responsible for weekly reviews of the medical literature and presenting them directly to the Mayor’s office and health commissioner. Dr. Dery has also been a medical responder to global catastrophes such as Hurricane Katrina and the 2010 Haiti earthquake and worked as a clinical field epidemiologist for the World Health Organization during the 2014-15 Ebola virus epidemic in Sierra Leone.
The subject of a four-page feature article in Time Magazine, multiple features in Vice, a recent op-ed in the National Memo, and much more, Dr. Dery is no stranger to the media and is often sought after for his medical expertise, especially during this worldwide public health crisis. Dr. Dery was recognized as the Internist of the Year in 2020 by the American College of Osteopathic Internist and Healthcare Hero by the New Orleans Gambit in 2020. In 2021 he was named one of New Orleans’s most influential 500 people by BIZ NOLA. An avid human rights and social justice activist, Dr. Dery founded 102.3FM WHIV-LP, a radio station dedicated to raising awareness about HIV, human rights, and social justice issues. Dr. Dery also hosts a daily 10-minute podcast called NoiseFilter that can be found on all podcast platforms, outlining the most recent updates on Covid-19 and more. Dr. Dery has recently created short and informative public health animations on various topics.
