Participants will be able to:

  • Identify two distinctive features in CF-ACT as a treatment approach.

  • Describe two core ACT processes and discuss how they can be leveraged to intervene with Substance Misuse and Addictive Behaviors.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this presentation is to introduce participants to CF-ACT and its techniques.

Description

In this 90-minute workshop, participants will learn introductory techniques from Compassion-Focused ACT, discuss clinical reasoning related to their application to addictions and addictive behaviors in teens, and will briefly be exposed to the evidence base supporting these approaches in the addictions literature. The goal of this workshop is to provide a primer on CF-ACT to equip participants with a few new techniques they can use with clients who struggle with addictive behaviors and to inspire participants to explore the modality further.

Presenters

Eli Cwinn, Ph.D., C.Psych

Dr. Eli Cwinn, (C.Psych.) is a clinical psychologist who works with children, adolescents, adults, and caregivers. He does research on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), and adapting Evidence-Informed Interventions for complex community settings. Eli is an international trainer in both ACT and CFT, and he consults with hospitals, community mental health organizations, and provincial working groups on how to incorporate ‘third-wave’ CBTs into their service model. Eli is currently the chair of the Ontario Association of Contextual Behavior Science and has previously sat on the leadership committee for the international Special Interest Group for Applying ACT to Addictive Behaviors. He is an adjunct professor at Western University in Ontario where he teaches Assessment of Children and Adolescents, as well as, Intervention with Children and Adolescents. In addition to teaching, Eli also provides consultation on applied mental health research from an implementation science perspective. He is also the head of the psychology department for a large secure detention and custody facility where he provides training to residents, evaluates programs, and coordinates psychological services.

Eli uses experiential and evidence-informed practices for training psychotherapeutic techniques and philosophies. He brings authenticity, warmth, humor, and compassion to his training and tries to make them both meaningful and practically useful.
