Presenters will introduce the concept of neurodiversity as a cultural competency and the importance of promoting self-advocacy for clients. With insight from autistic self-advocate group leaders and past neurodivergent participants, neurotypical professionals present and share experiences as well as promote best practices which include the Nisonger Center’s Autism Self-Advocacy Program (ASAP) structured course and adjacent open support group. Topics discussed include identity first versus person first language as well as details about laws, leadership, self-awareness, communication and empowerment tactics and strategies.
