The training will address fundamental problematic approaches to the conversation or intervention attempts about substance use disorders with affected individuals; offer alternative strategies tied to underlying issues that cause both PTSD and SUD; and identify evidence-based treatments and how and why they are more or less effective.

The educational goal of this workshop is to improve diagnosis and treatment of co-occurring disorders of PTSD and substance use disorders by professionals.
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

Identify four well-intended but problematic approaches to prevention conversations and treatment of PTSD and SUD.

Describe the core issue for problematic substance use versus non-problematic experimental and social use.

Explain the theoretical foundations and applicability of professionally adopted evidence based treatments.
