Description

This is an intermediate level training that builds on the basic skills and science of recovery for patients and family members. The training is designed to assist clinicians in understanding the science behind recovery as well as incorporating the 12-Step Philosophy and principles into the process of change that both patients and family members go through. This training will assist clinicians in educating family members and building tasks for the families while the patient is working their own program of recovery. Everyone has some change to do in recovery, and this presentation helps clinicians help family members understand this process.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to assist clinicians in understanding the science behind recovery as well as incorporating the 12-Step Philosophy and principles into the process of change that both patients and family members go through. 

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Summarize the impact of substance use disorders on family systems and dynamics.

  • Define tasks for family members through each Stage of Recovery.

  • Develop a family relapse plan and protocol.

Dennis Cain, M.A., LMFT

Dennis Cain is a native of Georgia with long roots and history in Jacksonville. After serving our country for 24 years with the United States Navy, he returned to Jacksonville to continue serving those in need of treatment and recovery services. He earned his B.A in Psychology from Chaminade University of Honolulu, Hawaii in 2004 and his M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) from the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University in San Diego, California.

 

Dennis has been a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist since 2006 in both Georgia and Florida and has worked full-time at Lakeview Health Systems in the Family Programs and Licensed Professionals Programs since 2021. 

 

His background and experience in addictive diseases includes nearly 30 years of his own personal recovery; 10 years serving as a Drug and Alcohol Program Advisor and Awareness Facilitator in the Navy; over 15 years working with Addiction and Dually Diagnosed populations in a community mental health setting, group private practice, and DUI-Drug Court and Veterans Court programs. Dennis has served as a Clinical Evaluator and Treatment Provider for the State of Georgia’s “DUI Intervention Programs” and has been formally trained in Prime Solutions, Motivational Interviewing (MI), CBI-SA, CPT-C, and is a Certified Train the Trainer in Seeking Safety Models for Trauma and Recovery.

 

Dennis’s credentials include being Level I and Level II trained in EMDR; Certified DOD Family Advocacy Program Facilitator; Certified STOP Domestic Violence Program Facilitator; and anAmerican Association for Marriage and Family Therapy Clinical Fellow since 2009. Besides his formal training and education, Dennis has accrued over 5000 hours of group therapy and interventions working with family members and the person struggling with substance use disorders. 

 

Dennis’ passions include fishing, boating, music, and sunrise on Saturdays at the beach with his spouse of over 35 years. He has 2 adult children and 5 grandchildren, 3 of whom are dual citizens of the United States and Ireland.
