This presentation, facilitated by Sandra Brackenridge, LCSW and seasoned veteran Veterinary Social Worker, will showcase a dynamic panel interview delving into the experiences, challenges, successes, and perspectives of multiple Veterinary Social Workers (VSWs) embedded in private emergency and specialty animal hospitals. The panel aims to offer invaluable insights into the distinctive role of VSWs within this specialized environment. Our panelists will explore various facets of their profession, sharing firsthand experiences and professional insights.


The dialogue will span an array of topics, including:

  • Role Clarification and Scope of Practice: Attendees will gain a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted responsibilities of VSWs within emergency and specialty animal hospitals, from assisting pet owners facing challenging decisions to facilitating communication between veterinary teams and clients to supporting veterinary team members.


  • Navigating Ethical Dilemmas and Emotional Challenges: VSWs often confront complex ethical dilemmas and emotional strains. Our panelists will offer candid discussions and practical strategies for navigating these challenges while upholding professional standards and prioritizing the welfare of clients and patients.


  • Collaborative Care and Interdisciplinary Approach: Effective collaboration between VSWs and veterinary & leadership teams is pivotal for successful embedded VSW programs. The panel will showcase successful collaboration and emphasize the benefits of an interdisciplinary approach in addressing the psychosocial needs of clients and enhancing overall veterinary care quality.


  • Program Development & Macro-level Interventions: In addition to their direct practice roles, the panelists will also shed light on their involvement in program development for their perspective programs. By sharing insights from both direct practice and program development, attendees will gain a holistic understanding of the impactful contributions made by VSWs in shaping the landscape of wellbeing and client care in their workplaces. The panelists will also discuss their experiences with student intern programs.


Overall, the panelists will offer attendees a nuanced understanding of the role of VSWs within emergency and specialty animal hospitals by sharing their varied experiences, allowing for informed comparisons and insights.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explore the roles, responsibilities and perspectives of Veterinary Social Workers (VSWs) within private (corporate and non-corporate-owned) emergency and specialty animal hospitals.

  • Understand the diverse array of challenges & successes encountered by VSWs on a daily basis within the environment of their hospitals.

  • Gain insights into the organizational and systemic factors that impact the workflow and job satisfaction of VSWs within the unique context of emergency and specialty animal hospitals.
